Obituary of Hazel Louise Jacobs
ADRIAN-Hazel Louise Jacobs, age 92, of Adrian, passed away on Thursday, July 21, 2022, at her home under the loving care of her family and Hospice of Lenawee. She was born November 11, 1929, in Homewood, Kansas to William W. and Elodia M. (Caudra) Kershner. On August 12, 1950, she married Richard Earl Jacobs and he preceded her in death on February 10, 2018.
She is survived by her children, Michael Earl (Emma) Jacobs of Bluff City, Tennessee, Mark William (Jane) Jacobs of Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, Marieta Kay Borzym of Elmhurst, Illinois, Maxine Joy (Ted) Gritzmaker of Clayton, Michigan, Matthew Lynn (Deborah) Jacobs of Blissfield, Michigan, Mick (Joyce) Jacobs of New Castle, California and Melissa Jan (Jami Smith) Jacobs of Toledo, Ohio; a sister, Evelyn Dressler of Adrian; 12 grandchildren; and 13 great grandchildren. In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents; her sister, Mary Van Tuyle; and her brother, James Kershner.
Hazel and her late husband, Richard Earl Jacobs operated Jacobs Flying Service from 1958-1995 and were longtime stewards of the Lenawee County Airport. Hazel was given her first flying lesson by her husband in 1959 and was a flight instructor with 6,000 hours of flight time and flight instructed all seven of her children. She was invited to join the World of Aircraft Racing and between 1963 and 1974 she won seven trophies in the Michigan Small Race and Indiana Fair Ladies Race.
Hazel was General Manager of Jacobs Flying Service from 1970 until her retirement in 1995 and the Lenawee County Airport Manager from 1984 to 1996 and again from 2000 to 2005, retiring at the age of 75. In 1992, she was the Michigan Airport Manager of the Year (MAAE). She was a FAA Safety Counselor for 12 years, and a longtime member of Zonta International, Adrian Breakfast Lions Club, The Exchange Club, Maurice Spear Campus Board of Directors, and Holy Family Parish, St. Mary Campus. Hazel was a Piper Aircraft Salesperson, winning top salesperson for Michigan several years in a row. In 2013, Hazel was the first woman in the State of Michigan to be awarded the Wright Brothers Master Pilot Award from the FAA for completing 50 years of Safe Flight and making significant contributions to aviation.
After she retired, Hazel dedicated her time to continued service at Maurice Spear Campus and Adrian Breakfast Lions Club, as well as turning her yard into a rose garden oasis which earned her the June 2010 Adrian Garden Club Gardener of the Month.
Visitation for Hazel will be held on Wednesday, July 27, 2022, from 3-7 p.m. with a Scripture Service at 7:00 p.m. at Anderson-Marry Funeral Home, Adrian. The Funeral Mass will be held on Thursday, July 28, 2022, at 10:30 a.m. with visitation beginning one hour prior to the service at Holy Family Parish, St. Mary Campus with Fr. Michael Newman as celebrant. A private burial will be held in Oakwood Cemetery.
