Obituary of DeWayne C. Rendel

Morenci – DeWayne C. Rendel, age 91 of Morenci, passed away at his residence, surrounded by his family, on Friday, April 15, 2022.  He was born in Adrian on October 15, 1930, to the late Curtis and Velma (Grubbs) Rendel.  On October 21, 1951, he married Joan Yeagley in Hudson, and she preceded him in death of September 26, 2015.   After the death of his father, he left school to help his mother attend to his eight siblings.  He entered the United States Navy in March of 1949, and served his county for the next four years, being discharged in December of 1953. 

DeWayne ran two service stations in Morenci, until he and his wife founded Rendel Oil Company.  He and his wife would work the business together for the next 57 years.  DeWayne loved government.  He served on Morenci City Council for approximately four years before serving as Mayor of Morenci from 1971 through 1981.  He was also on the Regional Planning Commission and the Merry Lake Property Board.  DeWayne and Joan were also nominated Citizens of the Year in Morenci.

In his free time, He enjoyed talking to people.  Carrying on conversations with anyone he met.  He loved to fish and was a garage sale extraordinaire.  He was known for buying trailers just to put his garage sale treasures on to bring home.  Spending winters in Florida and summers at Merry Lake were also passions for DeWayne and Joan.  He was a member of the Morenci American Legion Post 368, the Morenci Sportsman Club, and the Fairfield Masonic Lodge. 

Surviving are his children, Stan (Marilyn) Rendel, Diane (Jim) Johnston, Gail (Leonard) Cleghorn, and Teresa (Matt) Barrett; grandchildren, Chris (JoDee) Johnston, Lindsay (Steve) Klein, Shane Cleghorn, Kerri (Jason Brooks) Cleghorn, Zachary Rendel, Riley (Libby) Barrett, and Brooke (Ryan) Summers; great-Grandchildren, Cooper and Sutton Johnston, Carter and Addison Klein, Abigail and Wyleia Brooks, Sofia Summers, and Annabelle Barrett; brother, Curtis (Janice) Rendel; sister, Marion Miller; and sister-in-law, Mary Jo Brewer.  Besides his parents and wife, he was preceded in death by brothers, Ronald, Lester, and Virgil Rendel; and sisters, Gladys Cole, Delores Fritz, and Norma Sellers.

Visitation for DeWayne will he held on Friday, April 22, 2022, at the Eagle-Marry Funeral Home in Morenci, from 1:00 – 4:00 PM and 5:00 – 8:00 PM, with Masonic Services at 7:00 PM, and on Saturday from 1:00 PM until time of service.  Funeral services will also be held at the funeral home on Saturday, April 23, 2022, at 2:00 PM, with Rev. William VanValkenburg officiating.   Interment will follow in Oak Grove Cemetery.
