Obituary of Phyllis Wright
Adrian – Phyllis Marie (Orwig) Wright, age 101, passed away on Thursday, April 7, 2022, at her home. She was born to Mortimer and Blonnie (Shank) Orwig in Toledo, Ohio on March 12, 1921. She graduated from Grand Rapids High School in Ohio. She married Robert E. Wright on July 4, 1940, then they moved to Adrian, Michigan. She had 35 years of marriage, as Robert passed away on March 17, 1976. They had two children, Larry Jack, and Lanta Jill.
Phyllis worked for 35 years at the Commercial Savings Bank, and at the Hurd Lock during WWII, making ammunition for the war, while her husband served in the Army. She and her husband spent many summers camping at Vineyard Lake.
In later years, she spent winters with her daughter in Texas, where she helped in mission work in Mexico. She enjoyed company, board games, crosswords, Farkle, and playing them with her grandchildren. Phyllis was a member of Adrian First Church of the Nazarene for many years, and she enjoyed her Sunday School Class learning about her Lord.
She is survived by her daughter, Lanta Jill (Wright) Shaffer; daughter-in-law, Janet (Elwer) Wright; grandchildren, Jeff (Jody) Shaffer, Julie (Shaffer) Coker, Tracy Shaffer, Cindy (Wright) Blaker, and Lee Ann (Trenton) Adamski; 11 great grandchildren; 11 great-great grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; brother, Herbert; sister at six months old, Evelyn; husband, Robert; son, Jack; and grandson-in-law, Steve Blaker.
Per Phyllis’ request, cremation has taken place. A memorial service will be held on Tuesday, April 12, 2022, at 11:00 a.m. with visitation beginning at 10:00 a.m. until the time of the service at the Adrian First Church of the Nazarene with Rev. Larry Betz and Dr. David Fulks officiating. A burial of cremains will be held at a later date at Lenawee County Memorial Gardens.
