Gerald Speelman

Obituary of Gerald Eugene Speelman

Gerald Eugene “Gene” Speelman was a man who journeyed valiantly in life and persevered patiently for his King to come on December 18, 2021.

From poor beginnings and a single mother in Morenci, he was born at home, breech, on March 7, 1942. He found lots of adventure as a kid and eventually graduated from Morenci High in 1961, married his beloved Mary Kathryn (Clauda) at Saint Joseph Catholic Church in 1963 and graduated from Toledo Barber School in 1964.  Their Sacramental marriage of 58 years nurtured their children Christopher Speelman, Janet (Leo) Munday, and Michael Speelman along with their Grandchildren and Great Grandchildren.

Gene was an outstanding provider to his family and devoted 30 years to his line job with General Motors. He made many life-long friends at Fisher Body in Tecumseh and Toledo where he retired in 1995. Gene was a life-long, proud parishioner of Saint Joseph Catholic Church and raised his children in the Faith.

Occasional merriment for Gene included tinkering with vehicles and fishing in his younger years, attending local sporting events of his children and hanging out with his brothers in Morenci. Once retired, the splendor of his day was being in nature while tending to his yard, walking the local trails for exercise, volunteering with Saint Vincent DePaul Food Pantry and enjoying his wife's cooking.

Gene is survived by his wife, Mary Speelman; his children, Christopher Speelman of Paulding, OH, Michael Speelman of Addison, MI, and Janet Munday (Leo) of Wapakonetta, OH; 8 grandchildren, Ariel Jacob (Michael), Ashely Speelman, Thomas Munday, Lucas Munday, Samuel Speelman, Olivia Speelman, Lily Speelman, and Sophia Speelman; two great-grandchildren, Elizabeth and Charles; his brother, Earl “John” Speelman (Shirley); and his sister,  Florence Lane.

Preceding him in death are his mother, Florence Mildred; his sisters, Ella, Flora, Betty, Juanita; and his brothers, Arthur and Wade.
