Obituary of James Bertis Bowman

James Bertis Bowman, 96 of Hudson, Michigan passed away on November 13, 2021, at the Lenawee County Hospice Care Center. He was born February 5, 1925, in Hudson, the son of Frank and Hazel Ilo (Quackenbush) Bowman.  He graduated from Hudson High School in 1943.  On April 6, 1945, he was married to Jean Ruth Bender of Waldron, in Angola, Indiana.  They soon purchased a farm near Devils Lake where they raised their family and entertained friends until Jean’s passing on May 16, 2011.  The later years of his life were spent at the site of his parents’ old family farm on Elm Road, southwest of town, where he could be found planting Christmas trees and tending a large garden.

Born with a “clubbed” foot, which the University of Michigan hospital repaired at a young age, Jim remained a lifelong “Wolverine” and staunch member of Franklin Roosevelt’s Democratic Party.  He was an acknowledged “workaholic” a trait learned early on the family farm.  He hired on immediately following high school graduation at M&S Manufacturing in Hudson where he became known as the man who could make any automotive part to perfection using an “Acme Screw Machine”.  He rose to the position of Plant #2 manager, which he held until his retirement at age 62.  He was fond of camping, fishing, hunting and entertaining family and friends while turning his place on Elm Road into a wildlife sanctuary. He loved his wife, children, grandchildren, great grandchildren and will be sorely missed by all.

Surviving Jim are three sons and a daughter, Steven (Mary) Bowman of Conroe, TX, Mitchell (Jeanne) Bowman of Clayton, John (Cheryl) Bowman of Murfreesboro, TN. and Cynthia (John) Binns of Addison; as well as 23 grandchildren, over 40 great grandchildren along with 4 great-great grandchildren, younger brother Franklin Bowman of Jonesville and sister Beverly Allion of Hillsdale also survive. He was preceded in death by four sisters, two daughters Barbara (Gilbert) Skinner of Port Ludlow WA and Susan (John) McCallum of Rollin.

Funeral services for Jim will be Thursday, November 18 at 11:00 am at the Eagle-Marry Funeral Home (415 W. Main St) in Hudson. Interment will follow immediately at Maple Grove Cemetery.  Visitation at the funeral home (517)448-3481 will be Wednesday November 17, between 4:00 to 7:00 pm.
