Obituary of Myra Joyce Goddard

ADRIAN:  Myra Joyce Goddard, age 82, passed away October 16, 2021 at Lenawee Medical Care after having suffered from Alzheimers Disease for many years.  Myra was born on February 9, 1939 in Frankewing, Tennessee to Robert and Lillian (Wisdom) Thornton.  She had two siblings, Larry and Jerry Thornton, both of whom preceded her in death.  On December 24, 1959, Myra married her first husband and father of her two children, Kenneth Alverson.  They divorced and on August 19, 1982, she married Kevin Goddard whom she remained married to for the past 39 years.  Myra graduated from Adrian High School and then after having raised her children, attended Siena Heights University where she earned both her Bachelor and Master’s Degrees.  Myra was also a licensed therapist.  She retired from Gerontology Network where she was the Director and was also instrumental in starting the Daybreak adult daycare program.  Myra loved working with the elderly, especially those suffering from mental illness and/or Alzheimer’s Disease.  She also formed long lasting friendships with her team at Gerontology Network. 


Myra enjoyed knitting, crocheting, gardening, traveling to Northern Michigan, Alaska, Tennessee and spending time at her home on Killarney Lake where she loved feeding and watching her hummingbirds. 


Myra is survived by her husband Kevin Goddard of Onsted, her children Kevin (Denise) Alverson of Adrian and Julie (Dale) Porterfield of Tipton, grandchildren, Danielle (Jeff) Winzeler of Tecumseh, Forrest Porterfield of Tipton, Kyle Alverson of California, Lindsey Alverson of California and one great granddaughter Maddisyn Winzeler.


Myra’s family would like to thank Hospice of Lenawee and the Camelot staff at Lenawee Medical for the excellent care that they provided her over the years.


Per her wishes, cremation will take place and the family will have a private celebration of her life.
