Obituary of Nell Ann Hughes
ADRIAN: Nell “Ann” Hughes, age 76 of Adrian, MI went to be with the Lord on Monday, September 6, 2021, at Hospice of Lenawee. Ann was born, December 11, 1944, in Adrian to Harold and Alice Griewahn Johnston. On August 6, 1966, she married Philip Hughes at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Adrian and he survives. Ann worked at Siena Heights University, Lenawee County Chamber of Commerce and was the Co-founder of the Adrian Chamber of Commerce with her husband Phil. She was also co-founder and owner of Ann’s by Design. Ann had many accomplishments, including bringing the ATHENA Award to Lenawee County. She was a recipient of both the Athena and the Amelia Earhart Award. She was proud to be an Academy Girl; a graduate of St. Joseph Academy. She graduated with a degree in Business & Management from Siena Heights after attending part time for 16 years so she could raise the couple’s two sons. Ann was unable to visit the Humane Society without adopting a cat. She loved Archie, Winston, and Sophie. She loved being with family and friends and was so proud of her grandchildren. She was an avid reader her whole life through and enjoyed time spent quilting, knitting and other needle work. The Shop was a close-knit community that customers describe as their “Happy Place”. Ann’s heart will always lie with the Adrian Dominican Sisters; she credited all good things in her life coming directly from their love, teaching and friendship. Ann loved to travel with Phil, her favorite trip was to Washington D.C. on Amtrak’s Capitol Limited.
Surviving Ann, besides her husband Phil, are two sons; Philip (Kimberley) Hughes of Ann Arbor, Matthew (Heather) Hughes of Adrian; a brother, David Johnston of Summerville, FL; four grandchildren, Claire, Alex, Isaac, and Brandon (Janey); and a great-grandson, Harvey. She is preceded in death by her parents.
A time of visitation will be held for Nell “Ann” on Tuesday, September 14, 2021, from 9:30AM until the time of the Funeral Mass at 11AM at Holy Family Parish, St. Mary Campus, with Fr. Mike Newman, O.S.F.S. as celebrant. In accordance with Ann’s request, a cremation will take place, followed by a burial of cremated remains at Oakwood Cemetery, to take place at a later date.
