Nancy Martin

Obituary of Nancy Jean Martin

Nancy J. Martin, age 84, passed on March 28, 2021 at home following a final bout with cancer.  She was born in Ypsilanti, MI in 1937 to William and Pearl Mitchell.  Nancy was married to John W. Martin for 54 years before losing him to cancer in 2011.  She attended Michigan State University, University of Maryland (Munich, Germany), and graduated from Eastern Michigan University with a Bachelors of Science in Education in 1959.  She also earned 30 post-graduate credits in education and business before retirement.  Nancy taught in Van Burren Township, Saline Schools and retired from Michigan Public Schools after 17 years at Washtenaw Community College.  She and John retired to Gladwin, MI and Venice, FL.  Nancy enjoyed Elk Lake in Gladwin for 73 years, and her family still does.  She moved to Tecumseh, MI after John’s passing in 2011 to be closer to her children.  She belonged to Clinton United Methodist Church, MARSP, Friends of the Library, and League of Women Voters.  Her beloved pastime was playing cards with friends and family.

Nancy is survived by her very loving and caring family: son, Steven (Jill) Martin of Tecumseh, daughter, Karen (Michael) Merrell of Tecumseh; four grandchildren: Nicholas (Kylie) McGill, Mitchell Merrell, Taylor (Tyler) Hebert and Betsy Wangsness; three great-grandchildren: Lilly, J.J., and Elise; brother, Edwin Mitchell of Gladwin; along with many nieces, nephews, great-nieces, great-nephews, and loving companion dog, Bonnie.  Nancy was preceded in death by her husband, brother Eugene Mitchell and sister, Marilyn LaRoe.

Per her wishes, cremation has taken place.  A private family ceremony will be held at Edwards Township Cemetery near the lake she loved.

Nancy and family wish to express gratitude to hospice staff for their support.
