Obituary of John W. Hermes
John “Jack” W. Hermes, age 94, of Adrian, died on Saturday, January 2, 2021, at his home. He was born September 16, 1926, in Adrian to Walter A. and Agnes (Neumaier) Hermes. On May 3, 1952, he married Gloria Swantek in Detroit. She preceded him in death on December 19, 2017. John served in the U.S. Army from 1945-1947, during WWII. He had been employed by Hayes Shoe Store in downtown Adrian for 25 years, and then by General Motors for 13 years, retiring in 1992. He was a member of Holy Family Parish St. Joseph’s Campus and was a lifetime member of the Knights of Columbus. He enjoyed golfing and any kind of yard work. He especially enjoyed Notre Dame football. GO IRISH!
Jack is survived by his children, Anne (Patrick) Molloy of Naperville, Illinois, Martha (Alan) Alexander of Tucson, Arizona, Matthew Hermes of Naperville, Illinois, Julie Miller of Almond, North Carolina, Sally (Gary) Oliver of Onsted, Mary (Kevin) Kucera of Adrian, and Lori (Richard) Meisinger of Plainfield, Illinois; fifteen grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; a brother, Paul Hermes of Marysville, Washington; a sister, Rose Hickey of Farmington, Michigan; two brothers-in-law, Andrew Engardio of Florida and Lawrence Drake of Manville, Rhode Island; and several nieces and nephews. In addition to his wife, Gloria, he was preceded in death by his parents, and two sisters, Annajean Engardio and Mary Lou Drake; a brother-in-law, Don Hickey; a sister-in-law, Nancy Hermes; and a son-in-law Dennis Miller.
At Jack’s request, cremation has taken place. All services will be private. Interment will occur in St. Joseph Catholic Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to Catholic Charities. Arrangements are under the direction of the Anderson-Marry Funeral Home, Adrian.
