Obituary of Rachel Jacqueline Green

Rachel Jacqueline “Jackie” Green, 96, formerly of Morenci, Mich., died Dec. 30, 2020, at Charter Senior Living in Sylvania, Ohio, where she had resided since May 2019.  Jackie was born Oct. 13, 1924, in Detroit, Mich., to Elton and Florence (Woodison) Barret.  Jackie graduated from Central Michigan University in 1946 with a teaching degree.

During college she met her future husband, Robert Green and they were married in Highland Park, Mich., on June 19, 1948. They moved to Bob’s hometown of Morenci, in 1949 where he began serving as publisher of the Morenci Observer.  When the last of her children was in school in 1962, she began teaching and served as a second-grade teacher for many years.

Jackie enjoyed making connections and helping people, and she was active in community services and events. Her affiliations included Morenci Child Study Club; Morenci Social Services Committee that formed to aid families in need at Christmas; committees and functions through the First Congregational Church, Morenci Garden Club, Morenci Area Hospital Auxiliary; Red Hat Society; Second Line Leader with the Ecumenical Jazz Band at the church; Soft Aerobics instructor; and a volunteer with Hospice of Lenawee.

Jackie is survived by sons David (and Colleen Leddy), Daniel (and Liz Rambus) and Thomas (and Ginny Gadbois Green); a son-in-law, Richard Ball; grandchildren Lisa (and Travis) Schmid, Megan (and Seth) Murphy, Janell (and Paul) Troutman, Benjamin (and Sarah) Green, Rosanna (and Taylor) Ballinger, Madelyn (and Travis Heeren) Green, Erin (and Jack McFarland) Green and Kerry (and Mart Viirand) Green; great-grandchildren Caroline and Elizabeth Ballinger, Ryland, Holden and Barret Green, and Evelyn Murphy; and sister Joan Neuwirth; and many nephews and nieces.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; sisters Lois Traverse and Naomi “Toni” Wright; and a daughter, Diane Ball.

No funeral services are planned during the pandemic. A memorial stone will be erected at Morenci’s Oak Grove Cemetery.  Memorial donations are suggested to Stair District Library or Morenci’s First Congregational Church.
