Obituary of Esther M. von Fange

Adrian - Esther M. (Ziegelbein) von Fange, age 94, died on Monday, October 5, 2020, at Hospice of Lenawee.

She was born to John and Lydia (Domsch) Ziegelbein in her grandfather Rev. Karl Domsch’s parsonage in Dunksburg, MO. She was then baptized by her grandfather and was later privileged to attend St. Paul’s Lutheran School in Concordia, MO. She was confirmed at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church there, and studied at St. John’s College in Winfield, KS and Concordia Teacher’s College, Seward, NE. After teaching at St. Peter’s Lutheran School in Flora, MO and St. Stephen’s Lutheran School in St. Louis, she was married to Erich A. von Fange. He preceded her in death on September 15, 2015. Their first home was at Concordia Teacher’s College, then following his teaching career, they lived in San Francisco, CA, Edmonton, AB and Ann Arbor, MI. Retirement followed in Tecumseh and then Adrian, where Esther had been a devoted member of the church family at Hope Lutheran since 1985. She was first and foremost a wife and mother, providing a home where the family witnessed her strong faith and enjoyed her cooking, sewing and gardening. Yet she could foray outside that role to work part-time for the Michigan District of the LC-MS and pick up quilting, card-making and cross-country skiing later in life.

The couple was blessed with five children, Paul (Sharon) St. Paul, MN; Ruth (Joel) Vore, Monroe, MI; Lois (Russell) Balsman, Roscoe, IL; Jana Federer, Milan, MI; Judith (Craig) Partlo, Las Cruces, NM. Also surviving are nine grandchildren, Steve, Kathryn, and Michael von Fange; Erich, Benjamin and Jonathan Balsman; Adam, Isaac and Hannah Bray; eleven great-grandchildren; a brother, Paul; and a sister, Eunice. In addition to her husband, Erich, she was preceded in death by her son-in-law, Len Federer; parents, John and Lydia; sisters, Elvira, Edith, and Dorothy; and a brother, Gilbert.
