Obituary of Joseph Michael Vargo Jr

Jasper - Joseph Michael Vargo Jr., age 70 of Jasper, died December 14, 2019, at the VA Ann Arbor Hospital. He was born September 2, 1949, in Adrian to Joseph Michael Sr. and Jean (Bradley) Vargo. Joe, a patriot at heart, entered the U.S. Navy in 1967, serving four years. Joe volunteered to serve in Vietnam from 1970 – 1971. He followed his calling again and enlisted in the U.S. Army in 1974. He became a U.S. Army Special Forces soldier and was revered by his brothers in arms and commanding officers. He served as an integral part of a 12-man team that performed missions worldwide. His continuous, spotless service took Joe to the senior rank of Master Sergeant. The last few years of his military career, he commanded a training company as First Sergeant at Fort Bragg NC of new troops, themselves hoping to become Special Forces soldiers. Joe served his country with honor and was always ready to defend the flag. His missions took him to faraway places, but his wife and son still set a place for him at the table as he missed holidays, birthdays, along with lengthy deployments. His devotion and commitment to stand ready to defend and serve his country was first in his heart, but equal to the love for his family. Joe retired from the U.S. Army in 1990, with his training in the U.S. Navy, as a Seabee (construction unit), Joe became a civilian licensed electrician. For several years, he taught U.S. Electrical Code at Fayetteville Technical College in NC. His love of country was in his heart and being until his last breath. Joe was a trained gunsmith, taxidermist, and an avid outdoorsman. Joe is survived by his son, Joseph Michael Vargo III of Englewood, Colorado; four grandchildren; a brother, Steven (Yvonne) Vargo of Fountain Hills, Arizona; former wife and mother of his son, Irene Dauber of Colorado; and a loving extended family. He was preceded in death by his parents.
