Obituary of Thelma June Mean

Adrian – Thelma June Mean, age 95, of Adrian, formerly of Livonia, died on September 9, 2019, at St. Clare Commons in Perrysburg, OH. She was born on June 20, 1924, in Detroit to Carl and Lillian (Parker) Irey. She married David Mean on July 23, 1948, in Detroit, and he preceded her in death on September 7, 2011.


She had a positive, encouraging spirit, and her humble gratefulness was evident to all, even under the challenges of advanced age. Thelma invested in the lives of others and will be remembered as an encouraging mother, grandmother, aunt, and friend.


Thelma was a nurturer, she chose to stay at home to raise four active children, scores of pets, and a lush greenhouse packed with exotic plants. She led an active life of service in the church, diligently working behind the scenes a nursery volunteer, a deaconess, and a leader in Pioneer Girls. She had a prolific green thumb and freely gave of the harvest. Many Arian homes have plants propagated in Thelma’s greenhouse. She was a certified Master Gardener, a member of the Fairfield Garden Club, and the Southeast Michigan Bromeliad Society.


Thelma is survived by; three daughters, Dr. Nancy Irey Holmes of Oregon, Debra (Keith) McNelly of Redford, MI, and Barbara (Mark) Conn of Portage, OH; a son, Stephen (Gaye) Mean of Costa Rica;  a sister in-law, Janet Irey; five grandchildren, Max, Mitchell, Emma, Ellen, and Sam, and many nieces and nephews.


 A gathering in celebration of Thelma’s life will be held on Monday, September 16, 2019, at 10 AM at Jasper Bible Church in Jasper, MI, followed by a memorial service at 11 AM with Pastor Bruce Jewett officiating.
