Obituary of James "Rebel" Cates

Adrian – James “Rebel” Cates, age 84, of Adrian, passed away on November 28, 2018, at his home surrounded by family.

He was born on June 4, 1934, in Princeton, AL, to Coy and Ottie (Lawson) Cates. On May 30, 1955, in Adrian, he married Marie Shepherd and she survives. Jim was a builder by day and worked at Tecumseh Products in the evening, retiring in 1995. He attended the Pilgrim Evangelistic Church in Adrian. He loved fishing, puttering around in his barn, and being with his family.


In addition to his wife Marie, Jim is survived by two sons, Gary (Vicky) and Jimmy (Kim) Cates all of Adrian; four daughters, Cathy (Terry) Swartz of Temperance, Donna (Bob) Coleman of Sylvania, OH, Lisa (Steve) Cates of Hillsdale,  and  Bobbi Jo (Bruce) Cates of Deerfield; brother, Oscar Cates of Nashville, TN; daughter-in-law, Debbie Cates of Kentucky; 15 grandchildren and 18 great grandchildren.  He was preceded in death by his parents; son, Billy Cates; two brothers, Coy and John B. Cates; and four sisters, Virginia Fowler, Francis Cagle, Dorothy Merritt, and Nadine Cates.


A funeral service for Jim will be held on Saturday, December 1, 2018, at 12:00 p.m. with visitation beginning at 11:00 a.m. until the time of the service at Anderson-Marry Funeral Home in Adrian with Pastor James Eckart officiating. Private burial to follow.  Memorial contributions may be made to Hospice of Lenawee.  Envelopes are available at the Anderson-Marry Funeral Home, Adrian.  You may send condolences to the family at
