ADRIAN – Richard Clare Hess, age 96, of Adrian, passed away on April 29, 2018, at his home.
He was born on April 29, 1922, in Adrian to Clare and Gae (Aldrich) Hess. He was a 1940 graduate of Adrian High School and graduated from the University of Toledo in 1947. Richard proudly served his country in the U. S. Navy. On May 8, 1948, in Ida, Richard married Jean Wesley and she survives. He worked in insurance sales, retiring from Kapnick Insurance in 1986. Richard was a member of St. Mary of Good Counsel Church and their choir. He played the tenor saxophone in the George Gordon Band for 30 years and also played the clarinet. He enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren, bike riding, hunting, and nature walks.
In addition to his wife, Jean, Richard is survived by, three sons, Joseph (Lisa) Hess, Michael (Christine Green) Hess, and John (Paul Manger) Hess; four daughters, Karen (Cliff) Garnsey, Carol (Art) Barnhart, Jeannie Louden, and Jacqueline (Todd) Dunbar; 18 grandchildren; 18 great grandchildren; and one great-great grandchild. He was preceded in death by his parents; granddaughter, Erin Barnhart; grandson, Dan Garnsey; two brothers, Lynn and Tommy Hess; and one sister, Joann Gooding;
Visitation for Richard will be held on Friday, May 4, 2018, from 4-7 p.m. with a Rosary being recited at 7:00 p.m. at Anderson-Marry Funeral Home, Adrian. The funeral liturgy will be held on Saturday, May 5, 2018, at 10:30 a.m. at St. Mary of Good Counsel Church, Adrian with Father Tom Murphy as celebrant. Burial will be in Lenawee Hills Memorial Park, Adrian with full military rites conducted by the American Legion Post #97 and V.F.W. Post #1584 Annis-Fint.
