Nathan Richard "Dick" Smith

On December 28, 2021, Nathan Richard “Dick” Smith, age 98, closed his eyes for the last time on earth and opened them for the first time in Heaven, II Corinthians 5:8b “Absent from the body, present with the Lord.” He was born on December 29, 1922, in Rollin Township, Lenawee County, MI, the son of Nate and Gladys (Bradstreet) Smith.


Dick graduated from Hudson High School in 1940 and Cleary College, Ypsilanti, MI in 1942. During World War II, he served as a Cryptographer in the Security Division of the Army Air Corp in the South Pacific Theater of Operation—Hawaii, New Caladonia, and the Philippines. After the war, he joined the former Thompson Savings Bank in Hudson, MI and retired 33 years later as Executive Vice President.


On November 11, 1946, he married Margie L. Swander, and they enjoyed 68 years together. He and his wife spent many winters at their winter home in Ellenton, FL. Margie preceded him in death in 2014.


Dick was charter member of the Open Door Bible Church in Hudson, MI and was an Elder and Sunday School teacher for many years. After moving from Hudson to Blissfield, he attended the Blissfield Baptist Church. In the past, Dick served as a director of the Rollin Telephone Company, director of Thompson Savings Bank, and director of the Lenawee County Salvation Army. He was a former member of the Kiwanis Club of Hudson and a life member of Blissfield VFW Post 10912.


Dick is survived by two sons, Ted R. (Sharon) Smith and Fred D. (Linda) Smith all of Blissfield; two grandsons, Jason (Susan) Smith and Justin Smith; three great-granddaughters, McKenzie Smith, Aubrey Smith, and Bristol Smith; and three great-grandsons, Garrett Smith, Everett Smith, and Aaron Smith. In addition to his wife, Marjorie, and his parents, he was preceded in death by two sisters, Jeanette Smith Klingler and Sandra Smith VanLoon; a brother, John McVay; a grandson, Matthew Smith; and a stepsister, Erma McVay Haeussler.


The funeral service for Dick will be held on Monday, January 3, 2022, at 11:00 a.m. with visitation beginning one hour prior to the service at Anderson-Rudd Funeral Home with Pastor Tom Frantz officiating. Interment will be held at Maple Grove Cemetery in Hudson beside Margie.
