James Kerekes

ADRIAN-James I. Kerekes, age 81, of Adrian, died Friday, September 17, 2021, surrounded by his family.  He was born March 21, 1940, in Toledo, Ohio to John D. and Catholene (Doniere) Kerekes.  On August 24, 1963, he married Veronica Andrews at St. Anthony’s Catholic Church in Temperance, Michigan and she survives. 


Jim enjoyed gardening, golfing, and playing court games such as hand ball and paddle ball.  He served for many years as a track official.  He played football at Indiana University in the early 60's and especially enjoyed attending Indiana University games.  Jim was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church, the MEA, and the Association of Track Officials of Michigan (A.T.O.M.).  He had been a member the YMCA for many years.  Jim was a graduate of Bedford High School, Indiana University, and Siena Heights University.  He was employed as a teacher, administrator, and coach for the Adrian Public Schools until his retirement in 1995.  He was a member of the football coaching staff at Adrian College in the 1970’s.


In addition to his wife, Veronica, he is survived by a son, James R (Kathy) Kerekes; four daughters, Kristie Kerekes,  Michelle Bednarczyk, Jennifer (Michael) Lengenfelder, and Angenette (Dan) Fudala , and grandchildren, Marina and Kiri Kerekes, Taylor and Benjamin Diaz, Jackson, Gabriel and Stella Bednarczyk, Henry Lengenfelder, Charlotte, Eleanor and Daniel Fudala, Madeline Criste: a great-grandchild, Olive Joy;  two brothers, John P. Kerekes, and Joseph Kerekes; a sister, Barbara (Patrick) Hartbarger; and several nieces and nephews.  Jim was preceded in death by his parents, two sisters, Mary Owen and Kathleen West, a brother, Anthony Kerekes, and a daughter, Kelleann Criste.


At Jim’s request, cremation has taken place.  Visitation will be held on Wednesday, September 29, 2021 from 5-7:00 p.m. with a Vigil Prayer Service at 7:00 p.m. at Anderson-Marry Funeral Home, Adrian. The Memorial Liturgy will be offered on Thursday, September 30, 2021 at 10:30 a.m. with visitation begininning one hour prior to the service at Holy Family Parish, St. Joseph Campus with Fr. Bob Pienta as celebrant.
