James Carl Hanson, age 83 passed away on Saturday, May 1, 2021 at his home following a long illness.
He was born on February 24, 1938 in Allegan, Michigan to Francis C. and Barbara C. (Campbell) Hanson. On August 17, 1963, James was united in marriage to Marilyn E. King in Upper Sandusky, Ohio. James earned his PhD in German Languages and Literature from the University of Michigan. He devoted his working career to teaching, including being a Professor at Eastern Michigan University, Adrian College, several teaching jobs overseas in Saudi Arabia and he even led a Teacher Training Project in Yemen for 2 years. He was a lover of classical music, a world traveler, a polyglot, fan of the Red Wings, Pistons, Lions, Tigers and the Wolverines. James was a scholar, a humanist, a casual gardener and above all else, a co-raiser of four unruly children and two grandchildren. He is at peace, his struggle finally over and will be missed beyond measure.
Surviving is his wife, Marilyn; four children, Michael (Terri) Hanson, Charles (Julie) Hanson, Catherine (Jamie Cirrito) Hanson and Stephanie Hanson; two grandchildren, Chloe Hanson and Thomas Hooker; and one brother, Hugh Hanson. He was preceded in death by his parents, his brother, David Hanson and another brother in infancy.
Per James’ wishes, cremation has taken place. Services are being planned for a later date in Allegan, Michigan. Condolences may be given online to his family at www.andersonfuneralservices.com.
